Why Lindsey Graham is Wrong in Giving Obama Approval to Use Drones Against Americans
Next week, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham will take to the Senate floor and encourage the Nobel Peace Prize winning President to use more drones against American citizens they consider enemies of the state. The Politico writes about Grahams new admiration for Barack Obama.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will offer a resolution next week commending President Barack Obama’s use of drones and the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki.
“Every member of Congress needs to get on board,” Graham said. “It’s not fair to the president to let him, leave him out there alone quite frankly. He’s getting hit from libertarians and the left.
“I think the middle of America understands why you would want a drone program to go after a person like Anwar al-Awlaki,” Graham added.
The newest discussions about drones and al-Awlaki comes after the White House sent a memo to members of Congress explaining the reasoning behind their killing of an American citizen who was working for Al Qaeda.
Graham said the resolution will allow for a debate about who the nation is at war with and what proper action during times of war is.
“The process of being targeted I think is legal, quite frankly laborious and should reside in the commander in chief to determine who an enemy combatant is and what kind of force to use,” Graham told reporters on Wednesday.
Graham said judges should not be the ones to decide individual cases of enemy combatants and the courts would uphold the president’s ability to decide.
“If this ever goes to court I guarantee you it will be a slam dunk support of what the administration is doing. I think one of the highlights of President Obama’s first term and the beginning of his second term is the way he’s been able to use drones against terrorists,” Graham said.
Let's not forget here there was no effort by the United States government to bring al-Awlaki to trial like the Constitution demands. What we are watching unfold in front of us is Obama creating his own kill list of American citizens he terms are enemies of the state and the order to send the drone to take them out. This is a very dangerous power to hand Barack Obama. We should look at what the Constitution says about instances of treason.
No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.
While I am no fan of al-Awlaki, I am also reminded of a string of domestic terrorist reports coming from the states and the federal government shortly after Obama took office like the MIAC report in Missouri. The terrorists the federal government targets in these reports aren't Al Qaeda, and who is to say that if we give Obama a pass and celebrate his unconstitutional efforts like Senator Graham is planning to do next week, the next step doesn't involve seeking out the "domestic terrorists" defined these reports?
We cannot allow terrorism to destroy our due process laws and give Obama great tyrannical power. Senator Graham is very much in the wrong for wanting to celebrate Obama's destruction of due process, which includes overlooking Article III Section III of the Constitution in regards to American citizens committing treason.
