Rand Paul Declares Small Victory for the Sixth Amendment
You may remember just over a year ago, Republicans joined hands with Democrats and committed a great crime against our Constitution, specifically the Bill of Rights.
The Sixth Amendment reads: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
Yet Republican Lindsey Graham led the charge to kill this important protection from government with the indefinite detainment language added in the National Defense Authorization Act, which Obama signed into law after promising to veto because of indefinite detainment.
We may be closer to the repeal of the indefinite detainment language as Senator Rand Paul has led the fight to restore the Sixth Amendment through the repeal of the indefinite detainment language in the NDAA. Senator Paul sent out the following e-mail late last week:
The right to a trial by jury is one of the very foundations of our Republic.
Thanks to the petitions and phone calls from concerned Americans like you, the Amendment stripping the indefinite detention language out of the NDAA just passed the U.S. Senate by a vote of 67-29.
But this fight isn't over yet.
Since the Senate amended the NDAA, it now has to go back to the House for approval.
So you and I must remain prepared to pick up this fight in the Senate in the near future.
Once again, thank you for all you do. I'll be sure and keep you updated on our fight to protect the 6th Amendment rights of all Americans.
In Liberty,

Senator Rand Paul
