General Motors Most Successful Year Ever?: Obama's Fictitious Success Story

Anyone watching the All-Star game last night probably caught General Motors claim it was the most successful year ever. It's hard to look at this and not laugh. Even more so, this commercial is really a Barack Obama campaign commercial who will soon make the case he saved General Motors.

News at GM hasn't been good in the last year. There has been the Chevy Volt embarrassment, which is its lack of sales. There has been the fires from its battery. Really, GM really hasn't recovered to the powerhouse it once was. It's hard to make the case GM is even healthy when you consider stock prices after the government decided to put it on the market to help GM repay its bailout, and remember GM still owes taxpayers billion.

Here's the story that isn't being told. The federal government is continuing to rebuild GM and boosting their numbers using your tax dollars. As GM claims it's having its most successful period either, it appears fleet vehicles purchased by the United States government may be helping develop this Obama success story. In other words Obama is cooking to books by using federal tax dollars to increase the purchase of fleet vehicles for government officials to use.

Bloomberg reports:

It looks like General Motors will be throwing everything in but the kitchen sink to help fluff its second quarter earnings numbers. Taxpayers continue to help with the cause as President Obama campaigns on the “success” of GM following the manipulated bankruptcy process that cost taxpayers $50 billion and another $45 billion of tax credits gifted to GM to help protect powerful UAW interests. We now learn that government purchases of GM vehicles rose a whopping 79% in June.


The discovery of the pick-up in government fleet purchases at the taxpayers’ expense comes just weeks before GM announces its second quarter earnings. Overall fleet sales (which are typically less profitable than retail sales) at Government Motors rose a full 36% for the month, helping to drive decent sales improvements year over year.
