Ron Paul Says He is Trying to Save the Republican Party
I recently went to a county caucus in Missouri. I got up to speak wondering who in that room knew what it meant to be a Republican and then tried to point to examples and definitions our founding fathers put forth. The second I mentions Thomas Paine as the first example, the crowd started to boo.
I have come to realize the Republican party has been hijacked by two factions. Progressives like John McCain and Mitt Romney who continue to move the party to the left, and those who call themselves conservatives but argue we need Republicans in Washington because they are better central planners than Democrats in the federal government. Both these factions are dangerous as they forget the most basic definition of Republicanism is to be ruled by law, and our laws prohibit the very central planning these Republicans promote--leaving most of those powers to the states to decide upon. The most important elections this year aren't for President or Congress. They are your state elections, because this is where the founding fathers decided the power needed to be placed to decide most of the issues we face today. That's why we have a 10th Amendment while the Constitution really does put great limits upon the three branches of the federal government.
There is one Republican who understands what Republicanism means. He fears we are losing the very ideas of Republicanism. On "Face the Nation" Ron Paul was asked why he was staying in the race.
His answer is one establishment Republicans will mock, but they are the same Republicans who don't represent the values this country was founded on. They say they do, but their record shows otherwise. Just look at Lindsey Graham in the US Senate earlier this week ignoring due process in the Bill of Rights and Article III Section III on how to deal with treason.
“The truth is, I’m trying to save the Republican Party from themselves because they want perpetual wars, they don’t care about presidents who assassinate American citizens, they don’t care about searching our houses without search warrants, and these are the kind of things people care about,” Dr. Paul said.
“We represent the future about what freedom really brings us: Free markets and sound money and civil liberties and a sensible foreign policy,” he said.
And he's right. Republicans were essential in lengthening the Patriot Act this year. This law of course gives the federal government power the Fourth Amendment prevents the federal government from having, and year after year it's the Republican Party ignoring the Bill of Rights to give government this intrusive power as they claim to be "small government".
Of course the Republican establishment loves the power they have given the federal government, and they aren't going to stop in their quest to kill off the Constitution while they point fingers at the Democrats who are just as guilty.
