Billy Long Was Home for the Holidays and Absent From Debate for Payroll Tax Issue

Another one of Billy Long's tweets is in question. Last week, Long used the military to create this idea he was going to have to sacrifice this Christmas by having to stay in Washington, DC for Christmas.

Long told Chad on KZRG that Congress always planned to go home for Christmas by putting a temporary band-aid on the payroll tax issue. As of December 22, 2011, Long was already home for the holidays--meaning he got an extended break from his job--giving speeches at Rotary Club. On December 23, he was doing radio in Joplin.

Long was asked if he was going to head back to Washington for the payroll tax vote, Long said no. He couldn't get back to Washington, DC in time. In other words, Billy Long complained about this issue, but didn't feel like it was worth sacrificing his Christmas vacation to get back to Washingon. He said he didn't have enough time to get back to Washington on KZRG. Long has been noticeably absent on other key votes as of late like the National Defense Authorization Act, which gives Obama the authority to detain Americans without due process.

Now remember politicians like to create this illusion they are sacrificing for the people. Claire McCaskill uses this rhetoric as she said two years ago she wasn't going to get home in time for Christmas to bake Christmas cookies. Senator McCaskill, like Billy, made it

  1. Couple of things, the KZRG interview, bly Long's own admission, shows that Long had no intention of staying in DC for the payroll tax extension vote.

Long retweeted a tweet from @SpeakerBoehner in which Boehner acknowledges that. Perhaps Billy doesn't understand the meaning of "unanimous consent"?

Basically, as CBS News explains, the plan was for a few of the House members who haven't already left Washington for the holidays (NOT including Billy Long to meet in the Capitol and move to pass the extensions by "unanimous consent." It's a procedure that allows things (usually those that aren't controversial) to be passed so long as no lawmaker stands up to object. http://tinyurl.com/crx7l8d

According to a report on KY3, (http://articles.ky3.com/2011-12-22/unemployment-benefits_30549152) southwest Missouri Rep. Billy Long said "I am disappointed," when he learned of the agreement.

"I knew it would be settled one way or the other. I just wish it had been the other. That may have been too much to ask from a Senate that hasn't passed a budget in over 975 days."

Unfortunately no one thought to ask Long what the other way was.

Long also put out this tweet on December 19:
Do you know where your Senator is? You're Congressman is in Washington working for a 1 yr solution like President wants #SenateIsOnVacation

Long probably 7 or 8 tweets mocking senators who left DC for the holidays.
