Reaction to the 99% Declarations
Please note this is not a reaction to the rallies and the solutions they propose themselves
So we posted the 99% declarations in their entirety a few days back, pretty much stating that they are at least thinking about creating their own representative government to tell the big boys that they don't like what's up. Anyway, here's that reaction post that was promised. Be sure to have that post open in a different tab so you can flip between the posts.
The points that are valid in my book include; point 1, (only partially; I believe that either corps need to be capped like individuals, or the individuals need that cap removed), point 3 for removing conflicts of interest, point 4 for dictating the side a politician should take on an issue through gifts or money transfers, point 8 (which is incompatible with a lot of other points by the way), point 9 for bringing up a generation of Americans that can actually compete with the world job market, point 11, point 12, point 13 (except for that green energy pitch there, but I'm sure we'll get there; don't need to rush it), point 14, point 16 with a vengeance! My views on how to get competitive with the world job market differ than these guys though, and I'll get into that in a second.
All the other points are irrelevant or would lead to a socialist Valhalla. Point 2 falls into irrelevance because all speech is protected unanimously under the First Amendment. Some people speak with their mouths (like these guys are doing) and other speak with money. When you go to buy something, you speak (or vote, as the common saying goes), with your dollars. Viewpoints go that way too.
I'll semi-agree to point 5 as the tax code does indeed need reformation. All the credits make the tax code extremely complicated and most tend to serve special interests (as most of them require a purchase to redeem). However, graduating income taxes are what we have now. It won't fix a thing. Instead, I propose this. Income tax and all the credits that go with it go away. Beautiful.Point 6? In their dreams. Not happening.
Point 7? Well, I stand against government and regulatory body power, so you could see how I would feel about this one. No regulatory should gain more power and I would venture to say that we should lower the amount of power these bodies have as well as completely dismantle some of them (here's a good one to start with).
Point 8 starts out good, but gets flawed as you begin to read in to it. It directly conflicts with point 6, which is about the single-payer healthcare system nonsense and the medicare. Instead, how's about we get the FDA to loosen up some testing requirements to make medicine cheaper, which is the language of that point.
Point 10 sucks. Big time. Forcing a tax surcharge on the corporations to help pay student loans will add another bullet point to why to avoid this country, instead; let the corporations pay for the education voluntarily. College students are smart enough to figure that out, and make choices.
Point 15 has good intentions, but the course of action is severely flawed. Instead of legislating our way out of our problem, we should make our currency more valuable by not printing so much of it. We could also inspire investor confidence by honoring our debts. Just a thought!
So there it is, if you want; we can debate it in the comments. All yours y'all!
