Billy Long? A Good Ol' Boy Like the Rest of Us?

I couldn't help but read Warren Findley's letter about Billy Long in the News Leader. It sounds like to me someone has mistaken Billy Long for a hillbilly--just one of us.

In the Monday letters to the editor, the letter regarding Billy Long (candidate for 7th District U.S. Congressman), I wondered, "what is wrong with being a 'good old boy'... or a hillbilly or Ozarker?" That proudly describes the majority of us living here in the hills where we are happy with our lives!

Does the fact that "good old boy" Billy talks a bit faster than the rest of us, because of his professional training as an auctioneer, disqualify him from running or being elected to Congress? Does the reference that Mr. Moore and Mr. Goodman "have the experience and wisdom" mean that the rest of [us] do not have wisdom and experience? Surely not!

While it may be "very difficult" for the writer to choose between Mr. Moore and Mr. Goodman, the rest of us will hopefully choose a citizen politician in the August primary and again in November.

Go Billy!

Um, Mr. Findley, just so you know, all the politicians in this race are citizens. Since you think Billy Long is just one of us, I must ask, do you live in a Highland Springs like gated community shut out from the rest of the hillbilly's you try to include Long with. Oh, yeah, Billy Long is a good ol' boy alright. He lives in that beautiful Highland Springs mansion. He pays up to $15,000 to play in the World Poker Tour. He has houses in places like Hawaii. Yup, Mr. Long is just one of the average folks here in Southwest Missouri, Mr. Findley.

Since you are obviously a Billy cheerleader. I am just curious Mr. Findley, have you heard Billy Long provide any real and original solutions in this race? Have you ever asked him a deep question that goes beyond his earmarks pledge. You see Mr. Findley, if you actually did any of the sort, you would quickly realize the lack of thinking power underneath that cowboy hat. At this time in our country's history, we just can't take that chance.

The 55 delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention were an experienced body of delegates who represented a cross section of 18th-century American leadership. Most were well-educated men of means who were dominant in their communities and states, and many were also prominent in national affairs. Nearly every one had taken part in the Revolution; at least 29 had served in the Continental forces, most of them in positions of command.

The group had extensive political experience as 41 individuals had been members of the Continental Congress. Three had served as president of the body and only 14 lacked congressional experience; eight had signed the Declaration of Independence; six had signed the Articles of Confederation with two having signed all three of the nation’s basic documents. Practically all of the 55 delegates had experience in colonial and state government with eight having been governors and the majority had held county and local offices.

I believe we need either Darrell Moore's or Gary Nodler's experience in Congress.

  2. My 12-year old daughter had caught the Billy Long Fed Up commercial on TV. She was in the back seat of the car last night mocking Billy. In a hick voice, she would say, "I'm Billy Long and I am fed up." It was quite funny.

If Billy Long is a hillbilly, he is a Beverly Hillbilly.

  4. Hard work and inheritence has gotten Billy where he is today. I see no reasons why that should preclude him from serving as a Congressman.

Could he work effectively to represent us? Now that's another question. He has carefully avoided being involved in public service for his 50-some-odd years so we really do not know how he functions in a group setting where authority is shared.

    But he would be entertaining.

  5. Anon 6:36 AM--- you are correct. Billy is entertaining and always good for a laugh.
Admirable qualities for an auctioneer, that and fast talking -- which Billy excels at.

But are these the qualities we look for in our congressman? No.

Sorry about the captcha. I hate them just like you, but the spambots have gotten ridiculous.
