Average Life Span in America is 78: Life Expectancy Is Up in the United States

As Obama talks about the US Healthcare system like it's the worst in the world, and new statistic came out today pointing to the possibility that healthcare in the United States isn't broken. The average age of death in America is now 78 years old. For women, it's 81 years old, and for men its 77. Both rates show Americans are living a year longer than the 2005 results.

What is the reason for the increase? The study said the falling rates of nearly all leading causes of deaths are causing Americans to live longer. How could this be? The way Obama talks hardly anyone gets the healthcare they need in this country! He leads us to believe the insurance companies just want us dead so they deny our care! Don't tell me Obama isn't being truthful about healthcare. It just can't be.

  1. Average life span is up and keeps increasing in all industrialized countries, that is normal with time. Yet, it is still a fact that the life span is longer in Canada and European countries with universal healthcare.

  2. Prince, you could easily make the argument that since care is harder to get in those countries, and there are plenty of proof of that, people in those countries take better care of themselves knowing healthcare is so hard to get. It will motivate plenty of Americans too to take better care of themselves one the reality of budget restraints (rationing) start to sink in.

  3. We already have rationing in this country. I'm a pharmacist and I see it all the time, people not allowed to get medications because their insurance companies won't pay for them. I see people not going to doctor's appointment because they can't afford to pay for the visits. Health care is easier to get in those countries, I visit them every year and my whole family is from Italy. They get regular doctor visits paid for and all their medications are covered. I wish people would stop with the negative propaganda, you just are against anything that's not created by conservatives and I have to see people suffer because of this political bias. They only people who will benefit from your political views are private insurance companies.

  4. So your justifcation for your argument is that you visit these countries? Hey I have visited a hospital in England, and I decided then I wan't nothing to do with it. That doesn't create a valid argument. While you cite your family, there are plenty of people with stories to share where they were denied treatment and placed into a long line in the same countries you speak of. The only negative propaganda is that of Barack Obama and Democrats telling us how rotten another sector of the American economy is all so they can gather more power. There is not right to health insurance, and just because an insurance company says no, doesn't mean a person can't buy pharmaceuticals from you. Do you ration their pills sir, or do you give them other options. Perhaps they should make cuts in other parts of their life--say cancel a cell phone, internet connection, cable tv, or their AARP membership if their insurance isn't covering 100% of the medications. This has nothing to do with political bias sir. That's where you are sadly mistaken. This is a Constitutional issue where the government is overeaching the power granted to them in the Constitution. This is republican or democrat. This is about preserving the limits placed on government.

The people who will benefit from my views sir are freedom loving people.

As I read your rant, I can't help but wonder if you own your own pharmacy. If so sir, you obviously went into business to generate a profit. If you don't, the people you work for are obviously in business to generate a profit. Do you give free medications to people whose insurance denies them? If not, and something tells me you can't afford to regardless who owns the business, how are you any better than the insurance companies under you warped thinking?

  5. yeah princeallesio, i am curious too if your pharmacy gives free drugs out to those who don't have insurance or can't afford it. i bet the answer is no because you will go out of business if you do. so why do you think the government, who is looking at nearly $20 trillion in debt, can sustain a new trillion dollar plus program when countries like the china are becoming more skeptical about lending the united states.

you see you have it all wrong princealessio. you think the government can fix what is broken, but deep down inside i know you know the problem is with the government. the government drives up the costs of medicine with the long path to fda approval with new drugs. pharmaceuticals get on the shelves in europe much faster then they do here in the states, which cut costs. how in the world do you think the government is going to cut costs when they continue to regulate driving up costs? it's just not logical. they made a mess of the insuracne company as well. wasn't it the late senator ted kennedy that helped create the hmo system that you obviously cuss at princealessio. i really don't think, especially for claiming to be a pharmacist that you have a good grasp on the argument princeallessio.

  6. I guess I deserved that, I was a little harsh in my 2nd post. I have to remember as I try with my republican friends, that it's really not worth it to get emotional over politics.
I guess I just came here to your blog to try to understand more where you are coming from. We will never agree because of one fundamental idea.... I don't believe the government is out to get me or ruin the country. I am sure just like myself, you want what is best for our country. I just think giving the private insurances some competition as well as allowing everyone to have affordable healthcare is good for our country. Maybe the solution could be forming a non-profit organization to run it instead of the government, would you agree with that? I know as you say to me, you know deep down inside that our health care system does need improvement.
To answer all your questions, no of course I wouldn't give things out for free nor do I expect anyone to do that all by themselves. I would not mind paying higher taxes along with others to see that our whole nation gets coverage. I don't understand why people were ok with the government spending so much in Iraq, why don't we spend more on improving our own country?
I am fine with companies making a profit off selling goods or services. I just think that insurances have sometime crossed the line denying people health they need because of pre-existing conditions or not paying for medications because of pharmaceutical companies who compounding the problem price drugs at unbelievable prices. I see how they convince doctor's to swith to their new more expensive brand names when cheaper alternatives which work the same way could be used. Taking advantage of people's health should not be a way to make record profits.
Yes my opinion from witnessing and talking to people about healthcare in Europe is a positive one. It's just an example I use that I believe in it, you may have seen it differently. I've never seen this massive rationing you speak of. You will have to tell me more about this negative experiences you have seen. I just hope these have been real life experiences and not just something you read about.
The biggest factor is how I see there people regurlarly go to doctor visits and always take their medications because they never have to have the problem of not affording them. Here many people skip these things and end up in the emergency room whose costs are alot higher than a doctor visit and this ends up highering costs for all of us.
Obviously we will never agree on this, its just the experiences we have had and how we grew up that will mold what we believe. I actually used to be more conservative but certain life experiences have changed my mind. Anyway, just speaking my opinion as you do. thanks

  7. So you want to know where I am coming from. That's easy. Read the Consitution. Read the Federalist Papers. Study what the forefathers meant by limited government.

If you want socialized medicine there is a way to legally do it in the United States. Read the 10th Amendment and discover what it means to your state. It's the reason Massachusetts and Oregon have a public option, but you should also read about Barbara Wagner in Oregon before you celebrate Oregon's system.

This isn't a Republican or Democrat issue. This is about limiting government and following the Constitution to prevent too much power from going into a central government. That's the purpose of the Constitution. It limits what the federal government can do and provides power to the individual states. The spread of power is safer to freedom than the collection of power from a central authority.

Everywhere I look, Obama is eager to get his hands on some new power. Yesterday it was details on more power to control the Internet. With all this power given to Obama, do you feel better about your freedoms? I don't.

You bring up Iraq. I am ashamed of the spending so-called conservatives spent while in office. It's one of the reasons, I don't consider myself a Republican. With that said, Obama and the Democrat's spending is out of control. He will spend more money in his first year than Bush spent all eight. That's scary.

What is even more scary is the fact that the economy isn't make a great rebound. It's sputtering. Good news here, more and more bad news there. All the while with each bailout and TARP dollar given, the government has more control over those companies. This isn't the role of the federal government.

Read those documents this weekend, and then come back here and tell me that you honestly say the people who founded this country wanted this much government in yours and in my life. They didn't. They preached personal responsibility. Responsibility that should make one give up their conveniences if it means purchasing medicine to keep them going. It's really sad how liberals in this country have created this sense of entitlement that robs people of their personal responsibilities. Just look at the Peggy Joseph video where she honestly thinks Obama is going to help her pay her mortgage and put gas in her car. That's what entitlement has taught Americans. That is sad. I would be so disappointed if Peggy Joseph was my kid begging the government for the things she should earn and has the opportunity to earn.

That's what each more entitlement does. It robs people from the desire to be their best knowing the government will always be there. I shouldn't have to remind you, history has proven the more people depend on government and are fooled by what looks to be a generous hand, the more they are betrayed when the collection of power by that government reaches too great of a point. That's not an opinion. That's a fact. The Communist revolutionaries had good intentions and the same beliefs of equality that Barack Obama shared with Joe the Plumber last year. Of course, that power eventually corrupted and Josef Stalin sent thousands and thousands of people to thier deaths in what were known as the purges.

When you read the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the Declaration of Independence, our forefathers saw the evil in a strong central government.

If you want a public option, petition your state and use the 10th Amendment. Don't hand more power to the government. Liberal were frightened by the amount of power George W. Bush had, and now Barack Obama is collecting more. I don't agree with the Patriot Act. I don't agree with Barack Obama listening in on American citizens and making the government immune from law suits from wire tapping. Open your eyes.

  8. RIGHT. That's just more general government deception. Call it the patriot act if it acts against the constitution. Brilliant...

    Way to OWN her bill

  9. All the usual arguements against doing anything and no substantive proposals on how to improve things. What do you propose, and please don't just spout something about the constitution or states rights.

    Make a real suggestion.

In the end privately run healthcare is starting to fail in America because it is becoming unfair to too many people. Why, in order deny care and eliminate unnessary costs.

We have rationing today. It is imposed in three ways: by lack of money; through the insurance companies denying care; and through the insurance compnies just refusing to pay for care. The first is not fair to the lower classes, and the latter not fair to those with insurance.

Under a democracy when something is percieved as unfair to too many people we risk those people voting for anything that promises to be fair.

If the conservatives had sensible party (Republicans are not conservaitve or sensible) and brought forward real proposals we might follow them. But alas there is no party and no proposals. Just people who propose that no change is allowed.

I trust Obama more than a CEO. At least I voted for Obama.

    cheers

  10. Solutions have been addressed through out this blog. You can't assume because you read a few paragraphs that someone hasn't addressed solutions in other entries.

My final solution is always based ont the Constitution. Politicians have long overreached on many issues, and for some strange reason, it turns out disastrous for more Americans. This is a state's rights issue, not an issue for the federal government. Can you point out where in the Constitution that Congress is authorized to creat a healthcare system? You can't. It's not in there. There are plenty of documents to support this.

It always comes down to fairness doesn't it. Is it fair that one kid gets an A and school and the other kid gets a D? Is it fair there is only one quarterback on the field for a school with a thousand students. Get over fairness. Life isn't fair. It's a weak argument based on pathos.

We don't live under a democracy. It's a common misconception about our country. Since you said it, this bill you obviously support doesn't promote fairness, nor does it support liberty and freedom.

If a conservative had brought any solution to the floor, and they did, the Democrats have the power to ensure it doesn't see the light of day. Please, you really don't beleive your rant do you? You wouldn't follow them because you think life should be fair.
