Hummingbirds

Having an appreciation of life is an important part of conservatism. I realize this more with each passing year. We use the land and its resources to live and survive, and we give back to it. We will never receive the recognition for our appreciation of the outdoors and the life contained in each eco-system.

I have had many close encounters with animals over my many years of enjoying the outdoors. I have been five feet away from wild deer looking directly at me at the Dunes Lake Shore in Michigan City, Indiana. I don't think I have ever been as close today to a more fascinating animal than the hummingbird. (Please let me walk away from politics for a few moments.)

I know I am getting older. I am not quite 40, I still have just over a year and a half to go. I am starting to do those things I told myself I would never do. I garden and I feed the birds. I received a hummingbird feeder as a gift recently.

For the first few weeks, it just hung. Then suddenly, the tiny bird came, but was scared off from the excitement of getting me over to the window. As they became more secure with the location of the feeder they began to visit more frequently. I would notice when I was out in the yard, they would fly over and away--still not comfortable with my presence.

Today, I picked some new ripened tomatoes and went in through the backdoor. I noticed it flying over the house. I fumbled for my keys in the doorway, and there it was just a foot away. I watched its reflection on the door's glass.

As the storm moved closer, I went outside to watch. I stood in the same door way when suddenly the little humming bird was flying just a foot away from my face. It wasn't sure what to do, and it probably feared for its life. I stayed still and it decided it would fly off. I went to sit down on the step, and it came back.

These little birds are about the size of a mouse. They are like little race cars--quick and agile. It was just so amazing to be that close to one considering how timid they are.

  1. Hi Clay: That was the best story! We don't have to do politics all the time, it's frankly depressing.

I love nature and animals too. Hummingbirds are the coolest. I saw one from about 4 feet away, I was inside the screen door and on the back porch hovering over the flowers was the sweetest little hummer, they way their wings beat so fast!

I have a couple of cardinals that haved lived in my yard for at least 5 years now, and I see bluebirds, and parakeets, and these tiny yellow birds the other day.

Do you think that If I hung a humming bird feeder with that nectar stuff they would come around in chicago? My street is very busy and noisy, but I have lots of birds in my huge evergreen trees! Thanks for the story.

  2. AS a small story that may brighten you-up.
I was camping in the Cascade mountain range in May one year. Elevation, 9.000 ft.
patches of snow and warm sun made one gorgeous day. My girlfriend and I had the ultimate pleasure of watching perhaps a dozen hummingbirds in a dating /matchmaking war. They would fly smack into each other and fall into the snow, Shake themselves off and fly up to battle for some damsel or other.
Imagine these creatures knocking themselves out of the air into snow!
This went on for 2 hours. Dazzling and I do hope you imagine the beauty of life's little joys and take solace..
Oh, my father is failing quickly into Alzheimer's.
    Good luck Get well.

  3. I should dig up some old shots I have of a hummingbird nest I found in a shrub beside the garage. There were 2 little tiny eggs in this little 1-inch teacup. They hatched and grew through stages. They grew so big they could no longer fit down into the nest and stayed up on the rim. Then one day I startled them and they flew off for the first and last time.

  4. After the solar cycle 23 comment on my blog, I did an extra post on the NAO which is a major indicator in long term weather forecasting and how it is not doing what it should be doing now. Another key indicator (the SOI) should be slightly negative since we are in a weak to moderate El Nino pattern in the Pacific. -.5 to-5 would be expected. The SOI is +12. That's off the charts for a la Nina event. These two key climate indicators being this far off cannot be a good sign for the upcoming winter.

Sorry about the captcha. I hate them just like you, but the spambots have gotten ridiculous.
