Utah Environmentalist Commits Auction Fraud for Oil Rights

Tim DeChristopher of Salt Lake City, Utah, decided to disrupt an auction for oil rights. DeChristopher's plan was to bid as often as possible to drive up the bid until he was the winning bidder for the parcels of land. DeChristopher never planned to pay for the land rights. He felt like he could stop the 'evil oil companies' from receiving exploration and mineral and oil rights to the land.

DeChristopher won 13 bids totaling $1.7 million, and drove the cost up for other parcels. DeChristopher should be arrested for auction fraud, since auction bids are considered a legal and binding contractual agreement, but a loophole might free him from any time. Winning bidders have ten days to reconsider and withdrawal their bids.

"He's tainted the entire auction," said Kent Hoffman, deputy state director for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Utah.

The FBI is questioning DeChristopher, a 27-year-old economics major at the University of Utah. (I wonder what they are teaching in economics at that school? Do you think its how the 'evil oil companies' are destroying the economy?) DeChristopher expects to be charged, and the case was presented to the U.S. attorney's office.

It's idiots like DeChristopher that are helping to rob Americans of their rights. Let's hope he serves time. Oil companies have a right to business and a right to provide Americans with energy. Environmentalist do not have a right to create havoc on a legal auction because they disagree. They do have a right to hold signs up in front of the building where the auction is taking place. It's time they learn their place and are forced to follow the laws.

Disrupting oil companies, hunters, and fur wearers is violating the rights of law abiding Americans. I am tired of hearing about weenies like Tim DeChristopher. This a dangerous world, and these people compromise our security through their selfishness.

Well, we can see that he is obviously not that bright if he is still in school at 27...

  2. He actually is quite bright and I think he is brilliant for his courageous action. He is a nontraditional student because he spent some years providing wilderness therapy for troubled youth. Maybe you should get the facts before you cast aspersions on others.

It is simple, really. Some people actually live a life of unselfish service to others before completing school. Others live a life of entitlement and attend on their parents' dime. Which category do you fall in?

BTW--I was there to witness what he did, and it was nothing less than inspiring. Remember that pouring tea in Boston Harbor was also illegal. He is willing to go to jail for what he has done. True patriots are willing to pay the price for a crooked government's actions. Thoreau and the founding fathers would be proud.

Tum is my hero, and I am honored to know him. I guess it is time for you to malign me now for speaking the truth.

  3. The Boston Tea party was about government imposed taxes, so if your hero has a problem, he should take it up with the government who unfairly taxes oil and then blames the oil company for the prices, not the oil companys.

I am not sure how you connect environmentalism to patriotism. I wish you would come back and explain. Our country was founded on free market principles, and environmentalist constantly attack those principles.

By the way, how are we going malign an anonymous post? You post anonymously and run. Have some courage and tell us who you are.

I will let Linz know you challenged her.

Well, maybe YOU "should get the facts before you cast aspersions on others." I fall in to neither category, as people cannot easily be placed into box A or box B in very many circumstances. To say so is ignorant.
I fall into the category of having worked for everything I've ever had. I fall into the category of working hard and doing what's right. I fall into the category of doing things legally AND morally AND ethically.
I hardly think your “hero” falls into THAT category. He may have inspired you, but he disrupted a perfectly legal auction. And, luckily for him, he will probably escape legal action by the hair of his teeth due to a tiny loophole. Oh, how we do love loopholes.
I’m glad you have a hero to look up to. Unfortunately for you, your hero is a menace to society. And, you, “Anonymous” can’t take a joke. I was just joking when I said he obviously wasn’t very smart. But, I’m not kidding when I say it about you.

  5. Tim DeChristopher is a hero and no one can say he doesn't have balls!

Civil disobedience is justified in a democracy because the majority is not always right.
    Rosa Parks is a hero.
    McCarthyism was a witch hunt.
    Hitler's Germany was evil.

Thank god for the little people with big hearts who have the guts to stand up for what is right.
